Our TV Series

The three shows are part of Maori Television’s special Covid-19 lockdown programming Mauri Reo, Mauri Ora – te reo Māori content to educate, encourage and entertain children in Māori medium education. Mauri Reo, Mauri Ora is hosted by the entertaining Ani-Piki Tuari and screens weekday mornings from 9am to 12.10pm.

Maiē follows the day-to-day lives of two animated characters Tipa and Tama as they receive words of wisdom from our Māori gods. Maiē teaches our tamariki kōrero and tikanga about the world around them.
Mahi Ora, a mix of animation and video, features animated characters Ahi and Tio as they interact with tamariki in familiar settings such as the kōhanga reo, the marae, and the seaside.
In Tohu Haukāinga we meet animated character Anahera as she explores the word around her. The series conveys messages of Hauora (Health), Whakaaro (Thinking and Reasoning), Tiaki Tinana (Physical Wellbeing), Kōrero Tuku Iho (Intergenerational
Knowledge).
Each series consists of 15 episodes, 10 minutes in duration. As well as introducing an array of new colourful characters to younger audiences, the series also features a staggering number of new catchy te reo Māori waiata.
The three programmes were co-produced by Wairoa-based companies AATEA Solutions and Korou Digital Agency.
AATEA is led by Kiwa Hammond and Hinerangi Edwards and the locally based business recently celebrated its 21st anniversary. A large number of the AATEA team were involved in the end-to-end production of each series.
Mr Hammond says, during these uncertain times we are able to bring something positive to celebrate, “Whether people knew it or not, during late 2020 Te Wairoa was quietly playing a huge part in ensuring that if we ever needed to go back into national lockdown that tamariki and whānau around the country would not be disadvantaged in their education. Each series was created, filmed, animated, recorded and produced in Te Wairoa with the tautoko of our talented whānau from kōhanga reo, kura kaupapa Māori, marae, and the wider community. While it is difficult to register what impact the Delta variant of COVID-19 may have in the weeks and months to come, it is satisfying to know that Te Wairoa has produced three television series in a very short time that will educate, entertain, and inspire.”

Korou Digital Agency is a digital education initiative focused on providing digital employment and career opportunities for the community of Te Wairoa, with a focus on Rangatahi and Te Ao Māori.
Director/People Manager at Korou Digital Agency John James Solomon says he never could have imagined content being created here in Te Wairoa that would be used as a learning resource during a global pandemic.
“To see our whānau come together and use their skills as indigenous digital creatives just goes to show what is possible when we all work together and support each other,” says Mr Solomon. “Under the guidance of AATEA Solutions, we were fortunate enough to work alongside such a talented group of people that were able to mentor our Digital Apprentices throughout the entire process – a learning opportunity that has progressed into ongoing collaborations around digital solutions for our rohe. We must also mention Starkraving Ltd – if it wasn’t for their 20 plus years experience in film production, our staff wouldn’t have been able to learn what it takes to deliver a quality production. To be able to do this in our backyard and utilize our very own talent here in Te Wairoa is something that will inspire the next generation and help create even more opportunities in the future.”
